Work fills most of waking life. Scripture has much to say about how Christians work — with integrity, excellence, kindness to coworkers, honest dealings, and the recognition that all work is for the Lord (Colossians 3:23). These verses ground the daily grind in eternal meaning.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward.”
Work as service to Christ.
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
Everything — including work — to the glory of God.
“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.”
Diligence opens doors to influence.
“Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”
Honest work, with surplus for generosity.
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Work in Christ's name.
“Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward... this is acceptable, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief.”
Honor difficult employers; God sees.
Work as for Christ, not just employer. Be diligent and excellent (Proverbs 22:29). Maintain integrity in unseen tasks. Speak truthfully. Treat coworkers as image-bearers. Pursue justice in management. Give generously from your wages. Take Sabbath rest. Don't make work your identity — it is service.
(1) Work with excellence (Colossians 3:23). (2) Maintain integrity in every transaction. (3) Treat coworkers as image-bearers. (4) Provide genuine value to customers/employers. (5) Be ready to give an answer for your hope (1 Peter 3:15) when asked. (6) Don't make work an idol. (7) Take Sabbath rest. (8) Be generous with your earnings. Work is ministry when done for Christ.
Yes. The Bible affirms all morally legitimate work as glorifying to God when done well and as service to Christ. Colossians 3:23 — 'whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.' 1 Corinthians 10:31 — 'do all to the glory of God.' Construction, accounting, plumbing, teaching, art — all can glorify God when done with integrity and excellence as service to him and neighbor.
1 Peter 2:18 — submit even to difficult masters 'for conscience toward God.' Pray for them (Matthew 5:44). Don't return evil for evil. Be honest. Set boundaries against sin. If abuse is severe, consult mature counsel about leaving. God sees and rewards faithful service even in hard environments. Your character matters more than the boss's.
Not necessarily — but motives matter. Diligent work that produces success (Proverbs 22:29) honors God. Workaholism that crowds out God, family, and Sabbath is idolatry. Greed-driven ambition is condemned (1 Timothy 6:9-10). Excellence in work as service to Christ is good. The question: what owns your heart?
