Biblical confidence is not self-confidence — it is confidence in God, in his promises, and in Christ's finished work. Hebrews repeatedly calls Christians to 'come boldly' (Hebrews 4:16) and 'hold fast the confidence' (Hebrews 3:6). These verses build a Christ-grounded confidence that doesn't depend on circumstances.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Confidence to approach God himself.
“So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
Confidence against the fear of man.
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.”
Confidence in prayer.
“For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.”
God himself is the confidence.
“In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.”
Access through Christ.
Build confidence in Christ, not in self. Pray boldly (Hebrews 4:16). Speak truthfully (Ephesians 4:25). Stand against the fear of man (Hebrews 13:6). When you feel inadequate, remember: 'I can do all things through Christ' (Philippians 4:13) — not in your own strength, but in his.
Biblical confidence is in God, not self. Hebrews 4:16 — 'come boldly unto the throne of grace.' Hebrews 13:6 — 'The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear.' Philippians 4:13 — 'I can do all things through Christ.' Confidence is built on Christ's finished work, God's faithful promises, and the Spirit's presence.
(1) Know the gospel deeply — your standing before God is in Christ, not in performance. (2) Read Scripture's promises — Hebrews 4:16, 1 John 5:14. (3) Pray boldly. (4) Remember past faithfulness. (5) Reject self-condemnation — Romans 8:1, 'no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.' Confidence grows by exercising it.
Christian self-confidence (in self alone) is not biblical — Proverbs 3:5 warns against it. But healthy self-perception rooted in being made in God's image and redeemed in Christ is biblical. The Christian is confident BECAUSE OF Christ, not because of self. As Paul put it: 'when I am weak, then am I strong' (2 Corinthians 12:10).
