When the path ahead requires courage you do not feel, Scripture supplies the foundation. Biblical courage is not the absence of fear — it is faith that God is present, strong, and faithful. Joshua's command to be 'strong and of a good courage' (Joshua 1:9) rings through every hard task God assigns.
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
God's command to Joshua at the start of conquering Canaan.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee.”
Moses' final charge to Israel.
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.”
Courage as a fruit of waiting on God.
“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.”
Paul's charge — courageous, mature Christian living.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
The Spirit produces courage, not fear.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee.”
God's presence is the basis of courage.
Pray for courage rather than feeling for it. Memorize Joshua 1:9. Take one brave step today and trust God for the next. Courage grows by acting. Remember: courage is not the absence of fear but faith despite fear.
Joshua 1:9 — 'Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid... for the LORD thy God is with thee.' Deuteronomy 31:6, 1 Corinthians 16:13, 2 Timothy 1:7 — God commands courage and supplies it through his presence and his Spirit. Biblical courage is grounded not in self-confidence but in the character of God.
Pray, asking God for courage (2 Timothy 1:7). Read and memorize Scripture — Joshua 1:9 is the classic. Remember past faithfulness — David told Saul about the lion and bear (1 Samuel 17:34-37). Take one step. Faithfulness in small things builds courage for bigger.
Biblical courage acknowledges real fear and acts in faith despite it. Even Jesus prayed 'let this cup pass from me' before Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39). Courage is not pretending you are not afraid; it is trusting God enough to obey when you are. Fearlessness can be reckless; courage is faithful.
