A prayer for direction at a crossroads, asking the Shepherd who leads on right paths for a clear next step, wisdom to see it, and peace to take it.
Lord, show me the next step. Make my paths straight as I trust you, close what is not mine, and give me peace about the way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Pray this at any genuine crossroads: job changes, moves, treatment decisions, relationship questions, ministry direction, and timing questions where both options look good. Pray it daily across a decision season rather than once, and expect the answer in steps.
Every crossroads in Scripture becomes a classroom in guidance. The promise is phrased as intimacy: 'I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you' (Psalm 32:8). The method is trust with the whole heart and a warning against leaning on our own spreadsheet: 'In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths' (Proverbs 3:5-6). James removes the last excuse: God gives wisdom 'generously to all without reproach' to whoever asks (James 1:5). And the summary image is a shepherd: the LORD 'leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake' (Psalm 23:3), guidance as something the Shepherd does continuously rather than something the sheep achieves. Biblical guidance is rarely the whole map; it is the next step, lit. This prayer asks for exactly that: a visible next step, a quiet heart to recognize it, and protection against forcing doors God has not opened.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Trust, acknowledge, and he will make straight your paths.
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
Ask God, who gives generously and without reproach.
“Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”
Show me your ways, LORD; teach me your paths.
“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”
Your ears shall hear a word: This is the way, walk in it.
Follow Proverbs 3:5-6: present the decision by name, declare trust over your own analysis, acknowledge God in each option, and ask for the straight path. James 1:5 adds the posture: ask expecting generosity, not reproach. Then watch the biblical channels: Scripture's commands and principles, wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14), circumstances, and the settled peace of Colossians 3:15.
Psalm 32:8 is God's own promise: 'I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.' Isaiah 30:21 pictures guidance as a voice at the moment of turning: 'This is the way, walk in it.' Psalm 25:4-5 is the matching human prayer.
Biblical guidance is cumulative rather than spectacular: the option that agrees with Scripture, survives wise counsel, fits God's known character, and carries a deepening peace as you move toward it slowly. Doors God opens rarely require you to violate his word, deceive anyone, or hurry past your conscience to reach them.
