A prayer for a mother who is ill, for the adult child or family member keeping watch, grounded in God's promise to comfort as a mother comforts.
Lord, comfort my mother as only you can. Heal her, ease her pain, and let her feel herself precious in your sight. Give me strength to honor her well. Amen.
Pray this at her bedside or from a distance, before her appointments and procedures, when siblings are deciding care together, on the hard anniversaries of a long illness, or as a daily prayer through her treatment and recovery.
Scripture honors mothers with unusual tenderness. God describes his own comfort in maternal terms: 'As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you' (Isaiah 66:13). Jesus, dying, arranged care for his mother from the cross (John 19:26-27), showing that attention to a mother is holy work even in extremity. The command to honor father and mother (Exodus 20:12) takes a particular shape when a mother is sick: honor becomes presence, advocacy, and prayer. The Gospels show Jesus responding to exactly this situation: Peter's mother-in-law lay ill with fever, Jesus took her by the hand, and she rose (Matthew 8:14-15). For the one praying, this season often reverses a lifetime: the comforted becomes the comforter. This prayer asks for the mother's healing and comfort, and equally for the watcher's strength, because Scripture treats both as part of the same act of love.
“As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”
God comforts as a mother comforts.
“And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.”
Jesus takes Peter's mother-in-law by the hand and heals her.
“When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”
From the cross, Jesus provides for his mother.
“Honour thy father 1 and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
Honor your father and your mother: the promise-keeping command.
“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
Precious in the sight of the LORD: she is seen and valued by him.
Combine the two comforts Scripture joins: ask for her healing and peace (Matthew 8:14-15 shows Jesus taking a mother by the hand and lifting her up), and ask for your own strength to honor her with presence and advocacy (Exodus 20:12 takes this practical shape in a sickness season). Isaiah 66:13 is the verse to pray over her: God comforts as a mother comforts.
Isaiah 66:13 is the most fitting: 'As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.' Pair it with Matthew 8:14-15 (Jesus healing a mother in her home), Psalm 116:15 (she is precious in God's sight), and the fifth commandment (Exodus 20:12) for the family's own calling in the season.
Distance does not limit prayer: the royal official's son was healed while his father was miles away (John 4:46-54). Pray specifically and daily, coordinate presence with family or her church where you cannot be the presence, and say the prayers to her by phone when she can hear them. Being prayed for audibly is itself a comfort to the sick.
