Joshua / Jesus — "the LORD saves"
The Hebrew name behind both 'Joshua' and 'Jesus' — 'the LORD saves.' Joshua (Yeshua) led Israel into the Promised Land; Jesus (Yeshua) leads his people into eternal rest (Hebrews 4:8-9).
Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ) is a shortened form of Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ), 'Joshua,' which combines YHWH (the LORD) with the verb yasha (to save, deliver). The full meaning is 'YHWH is salvation' or 'YHWH saves.' In the OT, Joshua son of Nun bore this name. After the exile, the shortened form Yeshua became common (used over 30 times in Ezra-Nehemiah for various people). When the angel told Joseph to name Mary's son, the Hebrew name was Yeshua. Matthew 1:21 — 'thou shalt call his name Jesus [Yeshua]: for he shall save his people from their sins.' The Greek 'Iesous' transliterates Yeshua; the English 'Jesus' comes from the Greek.
Yeshua is used. (1) For Joshua son of Nun, Moses' successor (Numbers 13:16; the book of Joshua). He led Israel across the Jordan into the Promised Land. (2) For Jeshua, a post-exilic high priest who returned with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:2; 3:2; Zechariah 3). (3) For other post-exilic figures (Ezra 2:6, 36). (4) Supremely, for Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:21 — 'thou shalt call his name Jesus [Yeshua]: for he shall save his people from their sins.' The name explains his mission. Hebrews 4:8 contrasts Joshua (Yeshua) with Jesus (Yeshua) — Joshua gave Israel rest in the land, but a greater Yeshua gives the people of God Sabbath rest. The very name 'Jesus' is a sermon. To call him by name is to confess his mission — Yeshua, the LORD saves.
“Thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
“God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
“There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.”
When you say the name 'Jesus,' you confess his mission — Yeshua saves. Call on his name (Romans 10:13). Trust him to save what only he can. Honor the name above every name (Philippians 2:9-10). The name is the gospel in one word.
Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ) means 'the LORD saves' — a shortened form of Yehoshua (Joshua). It combines YHWH (the LORD) and yasha (to save). When Joseph was told to name Mary's son, Matthew 1:21 explained: 'thou shalt call his name Jesus [Yeshua]: for he shall save his people from their sins.' The name announces the mission.
Yes. Yeshua is the Hebrew/Aramaic original. Greek 'Iesous' transliterates it; English 'Jesus' derives from the Greek. Yeshua, Iesous, and Jesus are the same name in three languages. Many messianic Jews and others use 'Yeshua' to emphasize his Jewish identity.
Same Hebrew name. Joshua son of Nun was Yeshua. The post-exilic high priest Jeshua was Yeshua. Mary's son was Yeshua. The English translations differ (Joshua, Jeshua, Jesus), but the Hebrew name is one. Hebrews 4:8 plays on this — Joshua (Yeshua) gave Israel rest in the land; Jesus (Yeshua) gives a greater rest.
Acts 4:12 — 'neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.' Philippians 2:9-10 — God has exalted Jesus and given him 'a name which is above every name.' The name embodies the gospel and is honored by every knee.
