Grief after suicide carries layers other griefs do not: shock, guilt, questions that loop at 3 a.m., and a silence from people who do not know what to say. These verses were chosen for survivors with great care. They speak of God's nearness to the crushed, hope that holds when answers do not come, and a love from which not even death, in any form, can separate the person you lost or you.
For those grieving a death by suicide: family, friends, and communities. If you are having thoughts of suicide yourself, please call or text 988 (US) or text HOME to 741741 now, and tell one person today.

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Crushed is the word, and near is the promise.
“My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you: upholding is for people who cannot stand alone right now.
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
Why are you cast down, O my soul? The psalmist argues with despair from inside it.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden: this grief qualifies.
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Neither death nor life... will be able to separate us from the love of God. Nothing about how they died changes where they stand with his mercy.
“Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.”
All the days ordained were written in his book: their life was known to God entire, including its end, and met with his presence.
“But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.”
He does not afflict from his heart: God's grief is with yours, not against your family.
“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
The secret things belong to the LORD: some questions are released, not answered, and that release is biblical.
“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. his”
Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning: hold on for mornings.
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you: the deep waters of this grief included.
“For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;”
Paul despaired of life itself, and was delivered: despair is in the Bible, and so is surviving it.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Even in this valley, the darkest kind, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing: prayed over survivors for two thousand years.
Short enough to write by hand, complete enough to stand on their own.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39
“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. his”
Psalm 30:5
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
Send Romans 8:38-39 without commentary; it answers the question survivors are afraid to ask out loud. For group support, the first section read aloud together breaks the silence that isolates this grief. Pastors: this page plus a support group referral (and the 988 line) serves better than any sermon illustration.
Psalm 34:18 (God near the crushed in spirit), Romans 8:38-39 (nothing, including death, separates from God's love), Psalm 139:16 (their days known and held by God), and Psalm 30:5 (morning promised to the grieving). Deuteronomy 29:29 gives survivors permission to release the unanswerable questions.
Say their loved one's name, bring practical help without being asked twice, and stay in month six when others vanish. Avoid explanations, speculation, and theological verdicts entirely; Job's friends helped most while silent (Job 2:13). Share the 988 line where relevant; it is care, not awkwardness.
Please act now: call or text 988 (US Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), text HOME to 741741, or go to an emergency room, and tell one trusted person today. Scripture's own sufferers (Elijah in 1 Kings 19, Paul in 2 Corinthians 1) despaired and were met with care, rest, and time. Your life is worth the call, and help works.
