Friendship is one of God's great gifts. Scripture honors deep friendship (David and Jonathan), warns against bad company (Proverbs 13:20), and shows that the deepest friendship is with God himself (Exodus 33:11) and with Christ (John 15:15). These verses celebrate and shape Christian friendship.
“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
Real friendship is constant — through every season.
“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”
Christ is that friend (Hebrews 4:14-16).
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
Friends shape one another for the better.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends... I have called you friends.”
Christ calls his disciples friends.
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Choose friends wisely; influence is real.
“Two are better than one... For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.”
Friendship gives strength.
Pursue Christ-honoring friendships. Be a faithful friend yourself — present, honest, loyal. Sharpen and be sharpened (Proverbs 27:17). Choose wisely whose company shapes you (Proverbs 13:20). Above all, deepen friendship with Christ — the friend who sticks closer than a brother.
The Bible honors deep friendship. Proverbs has dozens of friendship texts. David and Jonathan's covenant friendship (1 Samuel 18-20) is one of Scripture's most beautiful. Jesus called his disciples 'friends' (John 15:13-15). The Bible also warns about bad company (Proverbs 13:20; 1 Corinthians 15:33). Friendship is precious and shapes us — choose well.
Proverbs 18:24 — a wise friend; ultimately Jesus. Hebrews calls Christ a faithful high priest who sympathizes with our weakness. He is closer than family — knowing all and loving fully. Earthly friends can be 'closer than a brother' in moments of need; Christ is forever.
(1) Pursue local church — friendships grow in community. (2) Initiate — friendships require someone to start. (3) Be a friend yourself (Proverbs 18:24 — show yourself friendly). (4) Pursue depth — vulnerability and care over years. (5) Choose people who sharpen you spiritually (Proverbs 27:17). (6) Pray for friends. (7) Be patient — deep friendship takes time.
Christ-honoring friendship reflects the Trinity (Father, Son, Spirit in eternal friendship), models the gospel (sacrificial love), encourages holiness (iron sharpens iron), bears one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2), and points to the friend who never fails. Earthly friendship is a glimpse of the friendship with God for which we were made.
