Whether facing a final exam, a board certification, a thesis defense, or a long academic season, students and learners can anchor in Scripture. The Bible commends diligent study, asks for wisdom, and entrusts outcomes to God. These verses are for the late nights, the test mornings, and the long discipline of learning.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
Ask God for wisdom — he gives liberally.
“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”
God is the source of wisdom and knowledge.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Study itself is a Christian discipline.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”
Study with all your heart — for the Lord.
“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
Commit study to God; thoughts (and memory) follow.
“God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom.”
Daniel's testimony — God enables learning.
Pray before studying. Ask for wisdom (James 1:5). Commit the exam to the Lord (Proverbs 16:3). Study diligently (2 Timothy 2:15). Sleep well — Psalm 127:2 — God gives sleep to his beloved. Trust the outcome to God; do your part. Honesty in the exam matters more than the score.
2 Timothy 2:15 — 'Study to shew thyself approved unto God.' Colossians 3:23 — 'whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.' Proverbs 2:6 — God gives wisdom. Daniel 1:17 — God enabled Daniel and his friends to excel in 'all learning and wisdom.' The Bible commends diligent study as part of faithful service to God.
Philippians 4:13 — 'I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.' James 1:5 — 'If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.' Proverbs 16:3 — 'Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.' Pray these before the test; rest in God; do your honest best.
Pray for: (1) wisdom and clear thinking (James 1:5); (2) recall of what you've studied; (3) peace over anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7); (4) integrity in the test (no cheating); (5) wisdom for the broader season of study. Pray for your classmates too. Pray for your professors. Commit the outcome to God (Proverbs 16:3).
