Faithful spy, conqueror, faithful at 85
c. 1500–1380 BC · Old Testament
One of the twelve spies sent into Canaan — and one of only two who returned with faith. Forty years later at 85, he asked for and conquered the hill country: 'Give me this mountain' (Joshua 14:12).
Caleb was the son of Jephunneh of the tribe of Judah. He was one of the twelve spies Moses sent to scout the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:6). When the spies returned, ten gave a bad report — the land was good but the people too strong, the cities too fortified. The people wept and rebelled. But Caleb stood up: 'Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it' (Numbers 13:30). Joshua joined him: 'If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land' (Numbers 14:8). The people wanted to stone them. God's response was severe judgment — that generation would die in the wilderness over 40 years, except Caleb and Joshua. Of Caleb God said: 'because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land' (Numbers 14:24). Forty years later, after Israel conquered most of the land under Joshua, the 85-year-old Caleb came to Joshua and said: 'Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day' (Joshua 14:12). He claimed the land Moses had promised him 45 years earlier. Caleb noted: 'as yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me' (Joshua 14:11). He then conquered the hill country — Hebron and the surrounding territory — driving out the Anakim, the very giants whose presence had terrified the other spies. Caleb gave his daughter Achsah in marriage to Othniel (later Israel's first judge) for taking Kiriath-sepher. Caleb's life is summarized: 'he wholly followed the LORD' (Joshua 14:14). His name appears in the genealogies of Judah (1 Chronicles 2). His faith at 40 was the same faith at 85.

Caleb's significance: (1) He is the supreme OT example of faith that persists across decades. (2) His confession 'we are well able' (Numbers 13:30) is one of the great expressions of faith in God's promise. (3) God's commendation — 'another spirit... followed me fully' — is among the highest in the Bible. (4) His vitality at 85 is a testimony to faith-fueled life. (5) Hebrews 3:7-19 uses Caleb's generation as warning — only Caleb and Joshua entered because of faith. (6) He shows that faith and vigor in old age go together when grounded in God.
“Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.”— Numbers 13:30
“Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day.”— Joshua 14:12
“As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me.”— Joshua 14:11
Caleb was the son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah. He was one of the twelve spies Moses sent into Canaan (Numbers 13). With Joshua, he gave a faithful report: 'we are well able to overcome it' (Numbers 13:30). When the other spies and Israel rebelled, Caleb and Joshua alone of that generation entered the Promised Land — 40 years later. At 85, Caleb conquered Hebron from the giants (Joshua 14-15).
Because of his faith. Numbers 14:24 — 'But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went.' The entire rebellious generation perished in the wilderness over 40 years. Only Caleb and Joshua entered the land. Their faith preserved them where unbelief destroyed others.
Joshua 14:12 — At 85, Caleb claimed the land Moses had promised him 45 years earlier — the hill country with the giants. 'Give me this mountain' has become a cry of faith claiming what God has promised — refusing to settle for less, refusing to accept that age or difficulty disqualifies. Caleb conquered the mountain and drove out the giants.
85 years old (Joshua 14:10). At an age when most would settle for comfort, Caleb was claiming and conquering territory that had giants. He testified: 'as yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me' (Joshua 14:11). His vitality was a testimony to faith-grounded life. Old age was no barrier; the LORD's promise carried him through.
