About the New International Version

The New International Version was first published in 1978 and substantially revised in 2011, produced by more than 100 scholars from a range of denominations with one stated goal: accuracy without sacrificing readability. Rather than translating word-for-word in every case, the NIV aims for the clearest natural English that still carries the original meaning — a method translators call dynamic equivalence, balanced against real respect for the text's literal sense. That balance is why it became the best-selling modern English translation and the default pew Bible in a huge number of churches: it reads like contemporary prose, not a translated document, while still holding up to serious study. First-time Bible readers and longtime churchgoers tend to land on the NIV for the same reason — it gets out of its own way. Where the KJV asks you to adjust to 17th-century English, the NIV asks nothing of you but attention. It updates periodically as biblical scholarship and English usage shift, which occasionally draws criticism from readers attached to older phrasings, but keeps the text legible for each new generation rather than freezing it in one era's vocabulary.
