The cross is the center of the Christian faith — where Jesus died for the sins of his people (1 Peter 2:24), satisfying God's justice (Romans 3:25-26), defeating sin and Satan (Colossians 2:15), and securing forgiveness, justification, and eternal life for all who trust him.
The cross is the central event of Christian history. Several biblical truths. (1) The cross was the death of Jesus Christ. He was crucified under Pontius Pilate around AD 30-33. The four Gospels record his suffering, death, and burial in detail (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19). (2) The cross was substitutionary. Jesus died in our place. 2 Corinthians 5:21 — 'For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.' 1 Peter 2:24 — 'Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree.' Isaiah 53 — 'the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.' (3) The cross satisfied God's justice. Romans 3:25-26 — God 'set forth [Christ] to be a propitiation through faith in his blood... that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.' Justice and mercy meet at the cross. (4) The cross defeated sin and Satan. Colossians 2:15 — Christ 'spoiled principalities and powers... triumphing over them in it.' Hebrews 2:14 — Christ destroyed 'him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.' (5) The cross was foretold. Isaiah 53 (centuries before), Psalm 22 (the words Jesus quoted from the cross — 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?'), and many others. The cross was God's plan, not an accident. (6) The cross is the only way of salvation. Acts 4:12 — no other name. (7) The cross calls for response. Repentance and faith. Trust the One who died for you. (8) The cross shapes Christian life. Galatians 2:20 — 'I am crucified with Christ.' Luke 9:23 — 'take up his cross daily.' The cross is not only past event but present pattern.

Embrace the cross as your only hope. Trust Christ. Live in gratitude. Take up the cross daily (Luke 9:23). Glory in nothing else (Galatians 6:14). Preach the cross to others (1 Cor 1:23). The cross is the foundation of Christian life, mission, and worship.
To pay the penalty for sin and reconcile sinners to God. 1 Peter 2:24 — 'his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree.' 2 Corinthians 5:21 — he was 'made... sin for us.' Romans 3:25 — he was the 'propitiation' satisfying God's justice.
(1) Forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7). (2) Justification (Romans 5:1). (3) Reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). (4) Defeat of Satan (Colossians 2:15). (5) Removal of the law's condemnation (Colossians 2:14). (6) Access to God (Hebrews 10:19-22). (7) Eternal life.
Jesus took the penalty our sins deserved — he died in our place. Isaiah 53:6 — 'the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.' 1 Peter 3:18 — 'the just for the unjust.' Through faith, the penalty is paid; we are forgiven and accepted.
The cross is where God's love and justice meet, where sin's penalty was paid, where salvation was secured. Paul determined 'not to know any thing... save Jesus Christ, and him crucified' (1 Cor 2:2). The cross IS the gospel.
