The bride of Christ is the church — the people of God collectively, loved and chosen by Christ as his bride. Ephesians 5:25-27 — 'Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.' The marriage of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9) is the consummation of this relationship at Christ's return.
The 'bride of Christ' is one of Scripture's most beautiful images for the church. Several biblical truths. (1) The church is Christ's bride. Ephesians 5:25-32 — Paul develops the analogy at length. Husbands love wives 'as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it... that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.' (2) The marriage analogy runs through Scripture. OT — Israel as God's bride (Hosea 1-3; Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 2:2; Ezekiel 16). The relationship is covenantal, intimate, exclusive. Idolatry was 'adultery' (Hosea). NT — Christ as the bridegroom (Matthew 9:15; John 3:29; Revelation 19:7). The church is his bride. (3) Christ's love for the bride. (a) Sacrificial — he gave himself for her (Ephesians 5:25). (b) Sanctifying — he cleanses her (Ephesians 5:26). (c) Presentational — he will present her glorious (Ephesians 5:27). (d) Cherishing — 'no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church' (Ephesians 5:29). (4) The bride is being prepared. The bride is currently being made ready. 2 Corinthians 11:2 — 'I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.' The church is in the betrothal period; the wedding awaits Christ's return. (5) The marriage supper of the Lamb. Revelation 19:7-9 — the consummation: 'the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready... Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.' This is the ultimate celebration. (6) Implications for the church. (a) Christ's love is the standard for the church's life. (b) Holiness is the bride's calling — preparing for the marriage. (c) Exclusivity — the bride belongs to Christ alone. Idolatry, worldliness, and false teaching are spiritual adultery. (d) Joy — the relationship is one of love and union. (7) Implications for marriage. Ephesians 5:31-32 — earthly marriage points to the greater mystery of Christ and the church. Marriage is not the deepest reality but a signpost to it. (8) Implications for the individual believer. Every Christian is part of the bride. Christ loved you personally with the same love that called the church into being. The wedding is coming.
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it... not having spot, or wrinkle.”
“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.”
“For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”
“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
“He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice.”
“The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son.”
Live as part of the bride. Pursue holiness — the bride is being made ready. Love and serve the church Christ died for. Reject spiritual adultery. Rejoice in Christ's love. Anticipate the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9). Let earthly marriage point to this greater reality (Ephesians 5:31-32).
The bride of Christ is the church — the collective people of God loved and chosen by Christ. Ephesians 5:25-27 — 'Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.' Revelation 19:7 — at his return, 'the marriage of the Lamb is come.' Every Christian is part of this bride. The relationship is covenantal, sacrificial, intimate, and exclusive.
Because the church-Christ relationship has the qualities of covenant marriage: exclusive love, sacrificial commitment, intimate union, covenantal faithfulness. The OT used the same imagery for Israel and God; the NT applies it to Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:31-32 says earthly marriage itself points to this greater reality.
At Christ's return. Revelation 19:7-9 describes the marriage of the Lamb. The current age is the betrothal period; the bride is being prepared (2 Corinthians 11:2). At the wedding supper, the union is consummated. The Christian's hope includes anticipating this celebration.
Holiness — Ephesians 5:26-27, Christ sanctifies the church to present her without spot or wrinkle. Faithfulness — exclusive love for Christ; rejecting idols and worldliness. Unity — one body, one bride. Mission — making disciples who join the bride. Worship — the bride lives in love and adoration of her bridegroom.
