The Bible warns of 'antichrist' both as many false teachers who deny Christ (1 John 2:18-22; 4:3) and as a future singular figure of opposition (2 Thessalonians 2:3-12). Christians differ on the specifics, but all agree: deny Christ, follow falsehood, end in ruin.
The word 'antichrist' (Greek antichristos) appears only in 1 and 2 John, but the concept runs through Scripture. (1) Antichrists already exist. 1 John 2:18 — 'even now are there many antichrists.' 1 John 2:22 — 'He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.' 1 John 4:3 — every spirit that denies Christ in the flesh is 'the spirit of antichrist.' (2) The man of sin. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 — 'that man of sin... the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God.' (3) The beast of Revelation. Revelation 13 — blasphemes God, makes war on the saints, demands worship. (4) The number 666. Revelation 13:18. (5) Christ's victory is certain. 2 Thess 2:8 — Christ destroys him with 'the brightness of his coming.' (6) Christians differ on interpretation. Some see future events; others see partial fulfillment in historical events (preterist). All agree: know Christ; walk faithfully.
“Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists.”
“He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”
“Every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist.”
“That day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed.”
“There was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies.”
“And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet... cast alive into a lake of fire.”
Know Christ deeply. Test spirits (1 John 4:1). Don't be deceived. Don't be obsessed with end-times speculation. Live faithfully today. Christ's victory is certain.
Both current opponents who deny Christ (1 John 2:18-22; 4:3) and (in many interpretations) a future figure (2 Thessalonians 2; Revelation 13). All agree: the antichrist denies Christ and will be defeated at Christ's return.
1 John 4:3 — every spirit that denies Christ in the flesh. Any teaching denying Christ's deity, incarnation, atoning work, or lordship is the spirit of antichrist.
Revelation 13:18 — 'the number of the beast.' Many interpretations have been offered. Most Christians hold humility — confident identifications have repeatedly failed.
Know Christ deeply. Saturate in Scripture. Test all teaching (1 John 4:1). Don't be deceived. Don't let speculation consume your energy.
