The Bible teaches that Christians wage spiritual warfare against unseen powers — 'against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world' (Ephesians 6:12). The weapons are 'not carnal, but mighty through God' (2 Corinthians 10:4). Christ has already won the decisive victory at the cross (Colossians 2:15).
Spiritual warfare is the ongoing battle between God's kingdom and the kingdom of darkness in which every Christian is involved. Several biblical truths. (1) The battle is real. Ephesians 6:12 — 'we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.' The Christian life is not on neutral ground. (2) The enemy is identified. Satan and his demons. Jesus called Satan 'the prince of this world' (John 12:31). 1 Peter 5:8 — 'your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.' Real, personal, dangerous. (3) The weapons are spiritual. 2 Corinthians 10:4 — 'For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.' Prayer, Scripture, faith, the Spirit. Not anger, manipulation, anxiety, or human cleverness. (4) The armor of God. Ephesians 6:13-18 — six pieces of armor and one weapon: belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit (Scripture), and prayer wrapping all. (5) The victory is already won. Colossians 2:15 — Christ 'spoiled principalities and powers... triumphing over them in it [the cross].' Hebrews 2:14 — 'he might destroy him that had the power of death.' Christians fight from victory, not for victory. (6) The pattern: submit, resist. James 4:7 — 'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.' Both elements matter. Submission first. (7) The mind is the main battlefield. 2 Corinthians 10:5 — 'casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.' Lies, fears, accusations — these are the enemy's main weapons. Truth defeats them. (8) The greater power. 1 John 4:4 — 'greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.' The Holy Spirit indwelling the Christian is greater than any opposing power. Common errors. (a) Ignoring spiritual warfare — 'be sober, be vigilant' (1 Peter 5:8). (b) Obsessing over it — looking for a demon behind every problem. C.S. Lewis warned of both extremes. (c) Trying to fight in own strength rather than God's. (d) Forgetting Christ's victory. Practical: how to engage. (1) Submit to God (James 4:7). (2) Put on the armor daily (Ephesians 6:13-18). (3) Pray Scripture. (4) Use the name of Jesus. (5) Stand on Christ's finished victory. (6) Refuse the enemy's lies; embrace God's truth. (7) Stay in community — the lone Christian is vulnerable. (8) Watch the mind; bring every thought captive to Christ.
“Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God... For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers.”
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations.”
“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Engage spiritual warfare daily. Submit to God first (James 4:7). Put on the armor — truth, righteousness, gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the word, prayer. Bring every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). Stand on Christ's victory (Colossians 2:15). Don't fight in your own strength. The battle is real; the victory is sure.

Historic Christian consensus: no. The indwelling Holy Spirit is greater than any demonic power (1 John 4:4). But Christians can be oppressed, harassed, or tempted. The remedy is the armor of God (Ephesians 6), submission to God, and resistance in Jesus' name (James 4:7).
Beware overdiagnosis. Many struggles are flesh (Galatians 5:17), world (1 John 2:15-17), or circumstance — not directly demonic. Signs of spiritual attack might include: sudden onset of fear or condemnation, persistent lies you cannot shake by truth, unusual obstacles to obedience or prayer, recurring patterns of temptation. The remedy is the same regardless: submit to God, put on the armor, walk in truth.
