The Bible teaches that God predestined believers for salvation before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-5; Romans 8:29-30). Christians differ on how predestination relates to human responsibility — Calvinist (unconditional) and Arminian (foreknowledge-based) views — but all agree salvation is by grace.
Predestination is one of the most debated doctrines in Christian history. Several biblical truths. (1) Predestination is in the Bible. The Greek 'proorizō' appears in Romans 8:29-30, Ephesians 1:5, 11. We cannot ignore it. (2) God chose believers before creation. Ephesians 1:4 — 'he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.' Ephesians 1:5 — 'Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children.' (3) The golden chain (Romans 8:29-30) — 'whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate... whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.' (4) Christians differ on interpretation. (a) Calvinist (Reformed) — God's predestination is unconditional. (b) Arminian — God's predestination is based on foreknowledge of who would believe. Both cite Scripture. (5) Both sides agree. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. No one boasts. (6) Human responsibility is real. The Bible commands repentance and faith (Mark 1:15). It calls all to come (Matthew 11:28). (7) Mystery remains. Romans 9:20 — 'who art thou that repliest against God?' Deuteronomy 29:29 — 'The secret things belong unto the LORD our God.' The doctrine's purpose. (1) Comfort — your salvation rests on God's eternal love. (2) Humility — you contributed nothing. (3) Worship — God's grace astonishes. (4) Mission — God uses preaching to gather his elect (Romans 10:14-15). Predestination doesn't excuse passivity. Don't fight Scripture; don't divide fellowship over this.
“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world... Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ.”
“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son... whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”
“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
“God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.”
“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience.”
“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us.”
If you believe, rest in God's eternal love (Eph 1:4-5). If you don't yet, the Bible calls you to repent NOW (Acts 17:30). Don't use predestination to delay; it is fully consistent with the call to faith. Worship the God whose grace exceeds human understanding.
Predestination is the biblical doctrine that God determined beforehand the salvation of believers (Eph 1:5; Romans 8:29-30). Christians agree it is biblical; they differ on whether it is unconditional (Calvinist) or based on foreknowledge (Arminian).
Calvinist: God's predestination is unconditional — sovereign choice. Arminian: God predestined those he foreknew would believe — humans freely respond. Both affirm salvation by grace through faith.
Christians differ. Strong Calvinists hold 'double predestination.' Most other traditions hold those condemned are condemned justly because of their own sin and rejection of Christ. Romans 9 is the central passage.
Because the Bible commands it. Acts 17:30 — God 'commandeth all men every where to repent.' Don't use predestination to delay. If you believe, your faith is evidence of God's work in you (John 6:37; Eph 2:8). Come now.
