The Bible describes heaven as God's dwelling place, the destination of believers after death, and the future home of the redeemed when the new heavens and new earth come. It is characterized by God's presence, the absence of suffering, and eternal life with Christ.
The Bible's teaching on heaven unfolds across both testaments. Three biblical pictures: (1) Where God dwells. Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4-5 picture God enthroned in heaven. (2) Where believers go after death. Philippians 1:23 — Paul desired 'to depart, and to be with Christ.' 2 Corinthians 5:8 — 'absent from the body... present with the Lord.' (3) The future new creation. Revelation 21:1-4 — 'I saw a new heaven and a new earth... And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying.' The final Christian hope is not disembodied souls in heaven but resurrected bodies in a renewed creation. What is heaven like? (1) The presence of God. Revelation 21:3 — 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men.' (2) No more pain or death. (3) The presence of fellow believers. (4) Christ's glorified human nature. (5) Activity, not idleness. Revelation 22:3 — 'his servants shall serve him.' Who goes to heaven? Those who trust in Jesus Christ. John 14:6 — 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' Romans 10:9 — 'if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.' Heaven is received as gift, not earned.

The biblical hope of heaven shapes Christian life now. It frames priorities (Colossians 3:1-2). It sustains hope in suffering (2 Corinthians 4:17). It motivates evangelism. It frees from grasping (Matthew 6:19-20). The Christian who looks forward to heaven lives differently now.
The Bible gives glimpses, not a tourist guide. Revelation 21-22 describes the new heaven and new earth: God dwelling with humanity, no more death or pain, a city of gold and precious stones, a river of life, the tree of life. The detail is symbolic but the realities are real. 1 Corinthians 2:9 — 'eye hath not seen, nor ear heard... the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.'
Those who trust in Jesus Christ. John 14:6 — 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' Most Christian traditions teach that believers go immediately to be with Christ at death. 2 Corinthians 5:8 — 'absent from the body... present with the Lord.' Jesus to the thief on the cross — 'Today shalt thou be with me in paradise' (Luke 23:43). This is the 'intermediate state' — conscious blessing with Christ between death and bodily resurrection. The final state is bodily life in the new creation.
John 14:2 (KJV) — 'In my Father's house are many mansions.' The Greek monai means 'dwelling places' or 'rooms' rather than the modern English 'mansion.' Modern translations: 'rooms' (NIV, ESV), 'dwelling places' (NRSV). The promise is intimacy and welcome, not opulent architecture — space prepared by Christ for each believer.
