Christianity is true because Jesus Christ rose from the dead — the central historical claim of the faith (1 Corinthians 15:14). The cumulative case includes: the existence and fine-tuning of the universe, fulfilled prophecy, the reliability of the New Testament, the transformation of the disciples, and the transforming power of the gospel across 2,000 years.
“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day.”
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
“Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you.”
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
“If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God.”
“You cannot prove Christianity.”
Christianity does not offer mathematical proof. It offers cumulative evidence — the resurrection, Scripture, fulfilled prophecy, fine-tuning, conscience, transformed lives. The standard is reasonable belief based on convergent evidence, not absolute certainty.
“Other religions claim to be true too.”
Religions make contradictory claims; they cannot all be right. Christianity uniquely stakes itself on a historical event (the resurrection) that can be investigated. Other religions point to teachings or revelations; Christianity points to a person — Jesus — who lived, died, and rose.
“Christians have done terrible things.”
Truth is independent of practitioners. Christians sin; Christ does not. The Bible itself is the most honest religious book about its adherents' failures. Christians have also done extraordinary good — hospitals, abolition, mercy ministries. The truth of Christianity rests on Christ, not perfect Christians.
Christianity is true on the strength of converging evidence: cosmology, fine-tuning, the historical resurrection of Christ, fulfilled prophecy, manuscript reliability, transformed lives. No single argument compels every mind, but the cumulative case is strong. Read the Gospel of John. Pray honestly. Test Christ. The door is open.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christianity uniquely stakes itself on a historical event. If Jesus rose from the dead, then his claims are vindicated, his teachings carry divine authority, his offer of forgiveness is real, and his promises of eternal life are reliable.
Christianity is unique in (1) being grounded on historical events that can be investigated; (2) emphasizing what God has done to reach humans (grace) rather than what humans must do to reach God (works); (3) claiming God himself became man in Jesus Christ; (4) offering salvation as a free gift.
(1) Read the Gospel of John. (2) Read Mere Christianity (C.S. Lewis), The Reason for God (Tim Keller), The Case for Christ (Lee Strobel). (3) Pray honestly: 'God, if you are there, show me.' (4) Talk with thoughtful Christians. (5) Apply Jesus' test: do his will (John 7:17).
Trust Christ as Savior and Lord. Repent of sin. Believe the gospel — Christ died for your sins, rose again, and offers eternal life through faith. Receive him (John 1:12). Be baptized. Find a Bible-believing church. Begin a relationship with God through prayer and Scripture.
